There are some themes and narrative areas we’re interested in covering in our conversation with you, so some of the following things might come up. Have a think about them, but you’ll definitely not be expected to speak at length (or at all!) about everything listed here, or anything you don’t want to discuss. We may not ask you about these directly, but if they come up in your stories, we might take the opportunity to follow up.

Things about you:

  • Your cultural, geographic, professional background

  • How you got into comics

  • Your comics milestones - for example, when did you publish your first comic? Or your most recent?

Things about your work: 

  • Why did you choose the objects you brought in?

  • What was going on in your life when you made them? 

  • Why did you choose comics as a medium?

  • What sorts of themes or stories do you gravitate to in your work?

  • How do you negotiate representing particular places or people in your work?

  • How do the material aspects of your work (e.g. tools, technique, printing)  influence your storytelling?

  • Has your comics practice taught you anything about yourself?

  • Do you have any big comic making goals?

  • Why did you stop making comics?

Comics communities:

  • Are you influenced by the Australian comics community or individuals in it?

  • Were you mentored, or do you mentor anyone else?

  • What institutions, events or publications have you interacted with?

Australia and comics:

  • What’s your favourite Australian comic?

  • Can you identify any trends or significant moments from the last 40 years of Australian comics?

  • How is Australia represented in comics?

  • Do you see any Australian prejudices aggravated by the visual language of comics?

  • What barriers do you think Australian comic makers face?

  • What could/should happen next for the Australian comics industry?
